Base oils (the raw material for lubricants) come from distillation or other complex processes carried out on certain types of crude oil, selected according to the characteristics required of the lubricants. The main characteristic of base oils is that they are lubricating, a property making them indispensable in reducing friction between moving parts and mechanisms.

These base oils may be:

  • Obtained directly from petroleum
  • Synthetic (made with bases produced by complex transformations or synthesis)
  • semi-synthetic (a mixture of the above).
